Noah and Jenny come back to the studio

Shared on: Saturday, July 26, 2008

It feels like only yesterday when little Noah last came into our photography studio in Seattle and it was so much fun hanging out with him and his lovely Mum Jenny this week.  The last time we saw him was back in May and the little guy is already 4 months old now and growing quickly – he’s such a happy baby boy and so alive with energy.  Jenny is an avid photographer herself and has been taking lots of photo’s of Noah and his Dad, but friends and family are complaining that there aren’t enough photographs of her so I thought I would post a few quick previews of her and Noah this morning before starting my day.

Happy weekend everyone!

The twins having fun in our photography studio

Shared on: Saturday, July 19, 2008

Yesterday I got to spend a fun couple of hours with twin girls who came into our photography studio here in Seattle for their six months photographs.   The first year is such an amazing time with so much growth and it still surprises me how quickly babies grow in their first 18 months.  Luckily for me I get to capture that which is a whole lot of fun.

Seeing as summer is here in Seattle (at last!) we wanted to create some light and airy photographs that were fun and captured the energy that the girls have.  Mum brought along lots of colorful outfits and the girls were in just great form.  The girls are in the crawl phase right now and not yet sitting up so I thought it would be perfect to having them laying down on a special mirror that I have for photographs.  We placed them together, gave them a few minutes and crawl they did.  This is one of many proofs that I’m excited to show Mum & Dad.

I loved this photograph so much that I decided that I would make a large print of it.  When you come into our photography studio you will see lots of pieces of art hanging from the wall and I’m always refreshing the art to show some of our latest projects and I thought this would be a perfect example of something fun and summer for the wall.  I just finished the first phase of our artisan process, click on the thumbnail below to see a quick video of the print in its earlier stages.  I just love it and think it’s going to make a great addition to our walls.

not so happy

Shared on: Sunday, May 27, 2007

Another photograph from the recent mirror session.   It wasn’t long after Mum pulled off his clothes it became apparent that the young man wasn’t so happy.  I think it was because the mirror was probably too cold for him and we should have warmed it with a hair dryer first.  Luckily I work quick and managed to grab a few good captures with him while he was naked and much happier!

reflected

This one is my favorite from the recent mirror session.  There is something that is incredibly simple in this photograph, enhanced I think by the basic black and white treatment.  But then again, in many ways I find it complicated and it takes me a moment to absorb because you don’t quite expect the boy in focus to be upside down and the only ‘normal’ position are his cute feet.

Life reflected in art is my best way to describe this

using a mirror to create an interesting photograph

As folks know I’m always looking for ways to create a different look for my clients and I’m constantly looking for new ideas and inspiration.  I’m not someone that uses silly prop’s or anything like that so when Heather and I started to discuss a shoot that we had scheduled for Bryson we both started to get excited about using a large mirror and sitting her son on top of that.   Before they got there Amy and I carried the large mirror from the entry way into the main studio area.  We then setup a black backdrop behind, making sure it was super tall so there was no other light entering the top at the frame.  After setting up one of my BrittDome  lights in about the center of the mirror I borrowed Mr Jester and used him as my lighting model.

As soon as the clients arrived we decided to give it a go, taking extra special care with this young man as we positioned him on the mirror.  Luckily he was an age where he was sitting up and he seemed quite interested in his reflection below him.  All in all I really liked the results, especially when he was looking at me through the mirror with his head slightly down.
